Mike Ryan with his 2012 Honda Gold Wing

Mike Ryan made a special trip to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame on Wednesday. The AMA Charter Life Member and resident of Marietta, Ohio, rode his 2012 Honda Gold Wing to the AMA Campus to deliver documentation of 500,000 miles of riding experience as part of his participation in the AMA LongRider program.

He said he achieved the half-million-mile mark during the Wednesday ride.

Ryan began riding motorcycles in 1976 when he was 22 years old. His first motorcycle was a 1976 Honda CL360.

He said he was a counselor in a joint program operated by Honda and the YMCA for troubled youth. He said Honda gave counselors in the program a discount on select new Honda models.

Ryan has owned seven motorcycles in his lifetime.

"I have owned four Gold Wings and have put over 100,000 miles on each of them," he said.

He said he has ridden in all 48 contiguous United States, as well as three Canadian provinces. He has also rented motorcycles to ride on St. Barthelemy and Cozumel, Mexico.

Mike Ryan's patch-covered jackets

Throughout his many two-wheeled journeys he has collected patches from the many places he visited. He sews the patches onto denim jackets and is now on his third jacket. He ran out of room on the first two.

For AMA members like Ryan who have many of miles of riding experience, as well as members who are just starting in road riding, the AMA LongRider program is your chance to show others that you're serious about riding your motorcycle. AMA members are invited to earn patches for various mileage milestones.
