MONSON, Mass. — More than 300 of the best amateur hillclimb racers took to the Quaboag Riders Motorcycle Club track Saturday, for a single run up the 420-foot "Monson Monstrer" on the first day of the 2018 AMA Hillclimb Grand Championship.

AMA No. 1 plates will be awarded to the rider in each of 24 classes who makes it to the top of the hill the fastest or makes it the farthest up the hill during the event.

The national championship event attracted riders from 15 states.

It is the facility's fifth time hosting the event since 1993. The starting pit was moved back 60 feet from its normal location and a table-top section was added during the week prior to the event. The changes were made to even the competition by reducing local riders' familiarity with the track.

The day's top performance belonged to Zachery Degross of Ellsworth, Wis. He was the fastest rider in three classes.

The day's overall fastest time was 10.589 seconds, posted by Joel Naples in the 450cc Class.

The event is set to resume at 8 a.m. Sunday. Class winners will be honored at an awards ceremony at the conclusion of Sunday's racing, as well as during AMA Legends & Champions Weekend in Columbus, Ohio Dec. 7-9.
