June 17 is International Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day

American Motorcyclist Association urges all motorcyclists to participate

AMA Press Release

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association encourages all motorcyclists and scooter riders to ride to work on Monday, June 17, the 28th annual International Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day.

The worldwide event demonstrates the practical benefits of motorcycles and provides a forum to highlight issues affecting motorcyclists.

"Ride To Work Day helps call attention to our way of life and gives us a chance to share our enthusiasm with those who don't ride," said Rob Dingman, AMA president and CEO. "Commuting to work, especially on a designated day of rider unity, highlights the positive aspects of motorcycling and the motorcycle lifestyle."

Event organizers expect more than 1 million additional riders on U.S. roads on Ride to Work Day, shortening commute times, reducing road congestion, consuming less fuel and preserving infrastructure compared to cars, trucks and SUVs.

More motorcycles than usual on the road and in the parking lot at work can arouse the curiosity of coworkers and others, giving riders a chance to share how much fun it is to ride and how easy motorcycles and scooters are to maneuver in traffic and to park.

"This day is not narrowly about encouraging the wider adoption of riding as transportation," said Andy Goldfine, an event organizer, former member of the AMA Board of Directors and 2013 recipient of the AMA Dud Perkins Lifetime Achievement Award. "It's about increasing the understanding of — and tolerance for — those who choose this form of mobility, and about providing support and encouragement to those who like to ride in transportation-centric ways."

Ride to Work Day, always the third Monday in June, also provides an opportunity for motorcyclists to highlight important issues, such as distracted drivers, unsafe fuels, motorcyclist profiling and motorcycle-only checkpoints, parking restrictions and the benefits of legal lane splitting.

Ride to Work Day is a nonprofit organization. More information is available at www.ridetowork.org.
