1970 Jawa 652 ’Banana Frame’ ISDT wins 2019 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Heritage Award

Malcolm Smith honored with AMA Dud Perkins Lifetime Achievement Award

AMA Press Release

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The 2019 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Heritage Award, presented at the Quail Motorcycle Gathering in Carmel, Calif., on May 4, went to a 1970 Jawa 652 "Banana Frame" ISDT owned by Chris Carter, the owner and president of Motion Pro.

Carter was an International Six Day Trials rider in the mid-1970s. The ISDT is now known as the FIM International Six Days Enduro.

From left, Chris Carter, AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer and Hall of Fame Legend Malcolm Smith and AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. Carter's Jawa motorcycle won the 2019 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Heritage Award at The Quail Motorcycle Gathering in Carmel, Calif. Carter, president and owner of Motion Pro, is a former International Six Days Trails racer.

"I have participated in past Quail Motorcycle Gathering shows and have had some success. But this year is really special, receiving the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Heritage Award was beyond my expectations," Carter said. "Having Hall of Famers Malcolm Smith and Mert Lawwill present made it even better. The Quail is a great event, and I applaud the AMA for being part of this world class motorcycle show."

The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Heritage Award recognizes a model that best represents a contribution or contributions that AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers have made to the growth of American motorcycling.

Carter's Jawa is a 250cc single-cylinder two-stroke made in Czechoslovakia (now The Czech Republic). The model was dubbed "Banana Frame" because of the large curved spars that make up the main frame. This bike is one of 25 of the 250cc machines built in 1970.

Also at the event, AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman presented the previously announced 2019 AMA Dud Perkins Lifetime Achievement Award to AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer and Hall of Fame Legend Malcolm Smith.

Smith was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998 and declared a Hall of Fame Legend in 2012. Throughout Smith's storied racing career and subsequent business and philanthropic ventures, he has been an advocate for the AMA mission and its programs.

Dingman also honored Re-Cycle Garage founder Liza Miller with a 2019 Friend of the AMA Award.

In addition to the Re-Cycle Garage, Miller started the weekly podcast, "Motorcycles & Misfits," about all things motorcycling. Miller and her crew have been enthusiastic AMA supporters, have attended and promoted AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days and provide the AMA with a monthly 60-second PSA slot on the podcast.
