Cody Chisham: 2012 AMA Dirt-Track Grand Championships 85cc Mod champion

Cody Chisham of Indianapolis is one of the fastest, and smartest, kid racers you’re going to meet, and he has the hardware to prove it.

Chisham not only captured first place overall in the 85cc Modified (7-11) class at the 2012 AMA Dirt-Track Grand Championships, but he earned the AMA Fast Brain Award, sponsored for the third consecutive year by dirt-track tuning legend and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Bill Werner and then-AMA Board Chairman Stan Simpson.

The Fast Brain Award recognizes a rider whose speed on the track is matched by stellar grades in the classroom. In 2012 Chisham have a straight-A report card.

Chisham, who has been racing six years, says one of the toughest competitors he faced week in and week out on the dirt track was Jeremiah Duffy.

Chisham says he enjoys AMA racing because it’s fun, “like playing and hanging out with my best friends in the world.”

For 2013 he plans to step up to a bigger bike: 250cc.

When he’s not racing, Chisham enjoys playing basketball, running cross-country and riding bicycles.

Racers can’t do it all alone, and Chisham is no different. He says he wants to thank “mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, Bob and Suzi, FMF, Decal Works, Leatt, Dink, and TAC2 Lawn Care.

“2012 was trying year for me on the track and away from the track,” Chisham says. “I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in October of 2011 and had some challenging times with this. I spent a week in Riley Hospital and have had to spend other days there as well throughout the year.

“I now take infusions every eight weeks and have been seeing some really good results with this medicine,” he says. “I have tried really hard to keep up with school and racing through these times. I was a straight A student in 2012, which helped me earn the AMA Fast Brain Award at the Grand Championships back in May as well as the 2012 Grand Champion in my class.

“I would like to thank everyone who helped me along the way and who has prayed and kept me in their prayers over the past year,” he says. “We belong to one of the BEST families around.”
