Archive Webcast: U.S. Senate Hearing on Transportation Reauthorization Legislation
November 09, 2011
The Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW), chaired by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), held a markup on November 9, 2011, on S. 1813, the “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act.” The bill specifies what transportation programs will be authorized for federal funding for the next two years. The committee voted 18 - 0 on the bill. It now heads to the full Senate for approval. If it clears the Senate, then it would go to the House for further consideration.
This bill has language that would end the Recreational Trails Program (RTP), which provides money to states to develop and maintain trails. The RTP, which became law in 1991 as part of a federal transportation funding authorization bill, is considered to be one of the most important and beneficial laws for off-highway vehicle riders ever passed by Congress.
