Jim Terchila: Bringing vintage dirt track to Indy

July 25, 2013

One of the more popular stops on the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series calendar is round 10 at the Mid-America Speedway (www.midamspeedway.com) in Indianapolis. Held the night before the Indy Mile round of the AMA Pro Racing Dirt Track Championship, it draws a large contingent of pro racers as well as some unique vintage racebikes. We caught up with Jim Terchila, the promoter of the vintage race, to talk about the event.

American Motorcyclist: What makes this venue special?

Jim Terchila: It’s a limestone track. It’s probably the smoothest short track you’ll find. It seems to be a favorite of a lot of racers. It’s a quarter-mile long and pretty safe, about 80-feet wide in the corners and 50-feet wide down the straights.

It’s at the Marion County Fairgrounds with seating for about 3,500 people. The pits are off turns three and four.

One thing that we pride ourselves on is that our events always start on time and run quickly. We have a 7 o’clock start time, and the first race will go off right after the national anthem at 7. We’ll run as many as 200 riders through the program in less than four hours. Our program moves fast, and racers need to watch the board. Don’t think if you have 10 races in front of you that you have a lot of time. You don’t want to miss your heat.

AM: Is there anything unique that racers can expect?

Terchila: The Astro Challenge is a popular attraction. Riders compete exclusively on Bultaco Astros -- a popular factory-built dirt-tracker from the 1970s.

We have some neat riders signed up. Jay Springsteen is coming. Steve Morehead is planning on being there, as well as Joe Kopp and Dave Aldana. It will be a full program. We now have 32 riders planning to come.
