Congressman attempts to mediate dispute

May 15, 2014

A California congressman has stepped into the fray between U.S. forest officials and a group of Phelan-area residents who oppose a plan to expand OHV trails in the San Bernardino National Forest.

U.S. Rep. Paul Cook (R-Apple Valley) is seeking consensus on the plan to build 13.4 miles of OHV trails, designate and maintain 9.6 miles of trails temporarily specified for OHV use and remove OHV use on 1.2 miles of road in an area north of Highway 138 near Interstate 15.

The Baldy Mesa OHV Trail and Staging Project has drawn objections from hikers and horseback riders in the area.

And a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints in Phelan wants one planned OHV loop re-routed, because he says it would twice cross the historic Mormon Trail.

Forest officials hope to receive about $2.4 million in grants to complete and maintain the proposed trails.
