Support the making of the John Penton Story

January 07, 2013

Todd Huffman, well-known maker of motorcycle films, wants to tell you the story of AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer John Penton. But he needs your help.

Huffman has launched a Kickstarter funding project to make a movie about the life of Penton. Penton is one of the most important figures in American off-road motorcycling and, in many peoples' eyes, was fundamental in the evolution of the off-road motorcycle into what it is today. Indeed, the motorcycles the world now knows as KTMs began as Pentons, developed under the ingenuity, hard work and dedication of Penton himself.

But Penton's story is more than just a business case study. Penton was also an accomplished off-road racer. He was the AMA Grand National Enduro Champion in 1969 and was a regular competitor in the International Six Day Trial (now known as the International Six Day Enduro). (AMA members can log into the Members Area of this website and read a 2010 American Motorcyclist feature story on Penton.)

Huffman, whose credits include "The Motocross Files" on Speed, "Legends of Supercross" on CBS, "The Carlsbad USGP:1980," "One Chance to Win" and "Bob Hannah's 1981 Massacre at Saddleback," now wants to make a movie about John Penton. He even has country music star Lyle Lovett on board to narrate the film. But movies don't get made for free. Huffman also needs money -- $150,000 of it to be exact.

This is where you and Kickstarter come in. Kickstarter is a way for investors to hook up with creative types like Huffman. Basically, you use the website to pledge funds to Huffman's project, and (assuming the project reaches its funding goal) he gives you cool insider swag. More importantly, though, a great movie about an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer gets made.
