Montana: Pipestone OHV Recreation Area

The Pipestone OHV Recreation Area near Whitehall, Mont., is a mecca for ATV riders not only in Montana, but also from neighboring states.

That’s because the 175,000-acre riding area boasts 75 miles of trails used by ATV riders, motorcyclists, mountain bikers and others. 

The U.S. Forest Service manages 147,000 acres of the land, while the federal Bureau of Land Management controls the other 28,000 acres.

Open year round, weather permitting, this riding area boasts forest and elevations of 4,500 to 5,500 feet. The smooth trails are marked but not rated.

A Montana off-highway vehicle permit is required to ride the trails, as well as a spark arrester. Also, your ATV must meet a 96-decibel sound limit.

Flags aren’t required, and there are no fees.
