LEXINGTON, Ohio — Mark Amyot and his son Maddox, made the trip from Syracuse, N.Y., to 2019 Honda AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Avon Tyres in large part to use the tools available at the Skidmark Motorcycle Garage display.
The community garage in Cleveland, Ohio, is operating two locations at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days this year. Attendees can perform maintenance on their machines, as well as access the help of community garage members. One shop is in the Old Bike Barn Crossroads. The other is near the north entrance to the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Swap Meet, presented by Federal Motorcycle Transport.
The Amyots attended AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days two years ago and bought a Honda CB350 that has had some problems. The frame was a 1969 model, while the motor was a 1973.
Mark Amyot said the bike ran for about 300 feet and just died. He contacted Skidmark Garage, and the group helped him find the parts he needed and help him through the repairs.
“They made me a gasket out of some bailing wire and duct tape, and it worked,” he said.
When the motorcycle had more problems, the family brought the bike to 2019 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days to get help from Common Motor Collective’s Brenden Mancuso, who was helping out at the Skidmark booth.
“Brenden has been our personal Yoda for the day, teaching us everything we need to know about these bikes,” Amyot said.
Both the younger and elder Amyot bought the parts they needed from Mancuso and were working to pull them off of some spare motors.
Looking on the Amyot family project with interest was Barry O’Toole of Westlake, Ohio.
He said he recently relocated from California, and it was the first time in 13 years he has attended AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.
He has a 1974 Honda CB360 project bike in his garage. He said it is about to be torn down into about as many parts as the Amyot bike was. He said he came across the little Honda through a connection he made at the International Motorcycle Show in Cleveland, Ohio.
He had to sell a customized 1948 Harley-Davidson he spent 17 years building, and is hoping his new Honda project will make up for the absence of the Harley.
