Tennessee: Coal Creek Mining & Manufacturing Co.

Oliver Springs, Tenn.

24/7/365

No, that is not a winning lotto number. But Coal Creek Mining & Manufacturing Co. is a winning combination, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

This Tennessee riding area is fantastic, covering 72,000 acres. Coal Creek is about 15 miles west-northwest of Knoxville in Oliver Springs, Tenn.

The owners of the CCMMC property have entered into a special arrangement with the Windrock ATV Club, which serves as consultant on the project.

To reach the Coal Creek trail head from S.R. 62 in Oliver Springs, go 3 miles north on Windrock Road. The trail head is staffed by the Windrock ATV Club, and you can pick up a free trail map from them. They also sell required use stickers, which are reasonably priced at $10 per day or $50 for an entire year.

The trailhead can accommodate large groups, and there is plenty of room for everyone to lay claim to primitive camp sites. Camping is free and unimproved, but there are plans to install toilets and electric hookups in the future. Open fires and alcohol are prohibited.

Most riding areas have more rules than Moses had commandments, but Coal Creek keeps it pretty simple: wear proper safety equipment at all times, ride only on marked trails, no hill climbing except in designated areas, no firearms, and don’t litter.

In terms of riding, Coal Creek has everything an ATVer would ever want, with wooded trails, hills, creek crossings, mud holes, scenic vistas and miles of trail with more being made all the time. ATVs, motorcycles, bicycles and large 4x4 vehicles are welcome. There is a special challenge area just for the large 4x4s, and there are some motorcycle single tracks. From expert to beginner, there is something for everyone.

You’ll find that nearby Oliver Springs can cater to just about all of your travel and recreation needs, and Oak Ridge, which is only 4 miles away, has all major restaurants and motels, plus an ATV dealership.

The 225-member Windrock ATV club is one of the largest ATV clubs in Tennessee. They recently held a charity poker run for East Tennessee Children’s Hospital and raised over $11,000.
