The AMA Flat Track Grand Championship racing at the Illinois State Fairgrounds’ half-mile track has been postponed until Thursday, due to track conditions and the threat of more rain.
Heavy overnight rains soaked the track and infield. The precipitation made the limestone racing surface and the grassy infield too soft to race or to park vehicles.
“A meeting was held between the Illinois State Fairgrounds staff, the event promoter Steve Nace Racing, and the AMA,” said AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant. “A decision was made by all three parties to postpone today’s racing until Thursday. Concerns were raised about the track’s suitability for racing and the risk of many vehicles getting stuck in the infield.”
Instead of postponing the TT and short track racing—which are scheduled for Thursday and Friday—all three parties have decided to “double up” the racing on Friday.
“On Friday, we will run the TT and short-track programs,” Saillant said. “One of our goals in doing this is to allow all of the racers and families at the event to not have to stay an extra day.
“There is also a threat of inclement weather Saturday, and we want to have the riders race the full AMA Flat Track Grand Championship racing program,“ Saillant explained. “The gates will open at 8 a.m.”
