SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The 2018 AMA Flat Track Grand Championship got underway at the Illinois State Fairgounds today. The four-day event will challenge the best amateur flat track racers in the country with three types of racing circuit (half-mile, short track and TT) to determine who will take home AMA National No. 1 plates.

Today's racing took place on a short track inside the fairgrounds' Multi-Purpose Arena. About 150 riders took to the track in muggy, overcast conditions. Despite several light showers during the afternoon racing program, all heat races, semi-final races and main event races were completed.

"Today was a great start to the 2018 AMA Flat Track Grand Championship," said Ken Saillant, AMA track racing Mmanager. "We are hoping for more of the same tomorrow."

One of the day's top performers was Dallas Daniels. The Mattoon, Ill., native took three class wins on the day (450cc Modified, 450cc Open Singles, 450cc Open Modified).

Another top performer was Tom Drane. The Australian rider won the 85cc DTX and 65cc DTX (7-11) main events and placed second in the 85cc Modified (7-11) Class.

On Wednesday, the Flat Track Grand Championship riders will compete on the fairgrounds' half-mile track.
