Polaris markets ‘Military-Grade’ ATV to civilians

March 11, 2014

Don’t like flat tires? Polaris says it has an ATV for you. The new Sportsman WV850 H.O. features what Polaris calls “Terrain Armor Non-Pneumatic Tires” that the company claims will never go flat.

Polaris says this is the first time it has offered the feature to consumers. Previously, it was only included on ATVs provided to the military.

David Longren, vice president of Polaris’ Off-Road Division, says the tire technology is designed for “extreme work applications.”

Polaris says it has tested the tire technology under several extreme situations, including logging more than 350 miles after receiving fire from a 50-caliber round, and driving 1,000 miles with a 3-inch railroad spike in the tread and webbing.

Other benefits of the tires are said to be a better center-of-gravity and improved cornering due to less pushing.

Other features of the Sportsman WV850 H.O. are:

  • A fully automatic transmission with forward and reverse gears
  • An upgraded shock package
  • Increased cooling capacity
  • Steel racks capable of carrying 600 pounds of cargo
  • A 2-inch receiver hitch that can tow 1,500 pounds
  • A 3,500-pound winch comes standard

The machine also has an 11.75-gallon fuel capacity, wider foot wells and standard electronic power steering.
