The 2013 AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships kicked off on Monday, June 24, at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill., bringing the fastest amateur dirt-track racers on the planet to one of the sport's most historic venues.
Jeffery Lowery, Jared Vanderkooi and Tristan Avery were standouts in the day's amateur race action, while Bri Hanzen was impressive in the Women's class and Steven Nichols looked good in the Super Senior 50+ class.
The AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships crown amateur and youth champions in individual dirt-track disciplines, including half-mile, TT and short-track events. Amateur racers also compete in mile events. At the end of the event, the most-outstanding amateur racer is awarded the AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award, presented to the racer demonstrating a readiness for success at the pro level.
