Photos from the American Motorcyclist Collection

The AMA has been protecting and promoting motorcycling since 1924. As part of that promotion, we've collected a lot of photography -- a lot! Many of these images are historic, some are trivial and several are mysteries.

This is our effort to enlist you, our members and motorcyclists everywhere, in helping identify the Who, What, When and Where of some of these photos. Some will be somewhat obvious, some will be obscure, but anything we can do to improve our knowledge of a certain image will help better preserve a memory.

Check out the photos below. If think you know who is in it, what it is illustrating, when it was taken and where it was captured, send us an email with "From the Archives" in the subject line at, and thanks!

We're guessing this is another easy one, but who knows? Any ideas on who's rocking the cool 'stache or the sweet Arai in this road race pic?

We asked: Clearly, someone is talking and someone is listening in this conversation. We're pretty sure we know who is doing the talking. What's your guess, and where and when do you think these photos were taken?

No question, this is a young Bill Werner giving some pit advice to an even younger Scotty Parker. Or maybe they're just discussing what will be on the menu at dinner that evening? We'll never know. The best guess on when and where was 1985 at the Springfield Mile. Jerry Garrett, Bob Paolella, Bob Cowgill, Jim Viverito and "Early Rizah" (is that your real name, Early?), among others, got this one.

We asked: We don't know much about these images. They were probably taken during the early 1980s, most likely at a dirt-track event. Any ideas?

What we learned: A lot of you thought we were off our rockers suggesting that all these photos were from a dirt-track event. Sorry! The photos were filed with a number of dirt-track racing shots and we jumped the gun. The fact is, the one on the left is from a road race. Kurt Fischer (and others) stated the obvious: "The chap on the left in the black and white hat and Kawasaki leathers is Yvon DuHamel."

Other info came from AMA Board of Directors member Jim Viverito, who says the rider on the far right is Frank Gillespe and "definitely at a dirt-track event." As for the middle rider, Mr. Viverito had two thoughts -- perhaps Chris Dreyer before he got the Harley-Davidson factory ride, but most likely Bob Bailey, "a west coast dirt-track rider likely promoting his own business with his name on his leathers. He's obviously too small in stature to be Dreyer!" Thanks, all!

We asked: Can you tell us the type, location and year of this race? What about the three riders on the line (the one in the middle shouldn't be too hard). Let us know, and thanks!

What we learned: We're pretty sure this is a Trans-USA race, most likely in the fall of 1980. The rider in the middle of this shot (No. 2 on a Yamaha) is AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Bob Hannah. Dave Martini adds that, "the race is Mid Ohio for sure. No. 9 is Steve Wise, and 79 is David Hollis from Michigan, who won a championship in one of those later fall series." Thanks, Dave!

We asked: This is a three for one deal! What we know: This is obviously an AMA Pro Hillclimb event. We have a pretty good idea of the location, as well as one of the riders, but what can you tell us about it? Year, names and place. Thanks!

What we learned: Lisa Gerencer Frazier, daughter of multi-time AMA Pro Hillclimb Champion Lou Gerencer Sr. and wife of multi-time AMA Pro Hillclimb Champion Tim Frazier, knocked this one out of the park.

From left to right, we have Dave “Hippie” Culross, Tom Reiser and Conley Newsome, Newsome and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Earl Bowlby (we knew that one!). Lisa says the photo was most likely taken in York, Pa., and is from the early 1980s.

(Special thanks to Scott Campbell for getting the pics in front of Lisa.)

We asked: This photo shows what appears to be a LeMans-style start at Daytona International Speedway. What else do you know about it?

What we learned: We didn't get much on this one, but AMA member Gordon Lunde says it was likely taken at a mid-1980s CCS endurance race prior to the pro weekend at the Speedway.
