Sam Wheeler, a legend at the Bonneville Salt Flats land-speed competition died Monday, July 25, of injuries sustained in a crash that occurred while he was testing his streamliner during the Mike Cook Shootout Test and Tune session, according to www.bonneville200mph.org. He was 72.

Details of the crash have not been released.
Wheeler joined the 200 MPH Club in 1970 with a record speed of 208.720 mph. He later raised his record speed to 332.410 mph and joined the 300 mph chapter of the club.
