Motorcycle Hall of Famer Wes Cooley cut right to the chase on the reason he selected a 1976 Harley-Davidson Super Glide for the Grand Marshal’s Choice award on Saturday, July 9, at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Bike Show, sponsored by Old Bike Barn.
“I could just see my ass in that seat riding down the road,” Cooley said. “So that’s the one I picked.”

Cooley is Grand Marshal for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 8-10 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
The blue Harley belongs to Mike Shaffer of Jennerstown, Pa.
“I bought the bike in 1985 or ’86 and put it all back to original,” Shaffer said. “It’s got an S&S flywheel and I brought the engine up a little. But I like it, because you don’t see a lot of shovels around anymore.
“My son will probably get it some time, but, for now, it’s still mine.”
Best in Show awards went to:
- American – Louis Meyer’s 1923 Neracar
- British – Gregory Beck and Angie Long’s 1950 Triumph Thunderbird
- European – Warren Olds’ 1976 BMW R 60
- Japanese – Samuel Wood Jr.’s 1972 Yamaha XS650.
