The AMA is the sole U.S. affiliate to the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, the worldwide motorcycle sanctioning body based in Geneva, Switzerland. The FIM comprises 97 national organizations (called Federations) from countries around the world. The FIM establishes and enforces racing rules and calendars for all types of international competition, ranging from motocross and road racing to trials and enduros.
Beyond its racing role, the FIM is involved in monitoring motorcycling legislation and lobbying for rider's rights. The FIM also deals with international touring activities, facilitates international travel, and is taking a more active role in vintage motorcycling.
Several senior staff members of the AMA serve in administrative positions on various FIM commissions. Through its affiliation with the FIM, the AMA also licenses its riders to compete in international events and coordinates world championship events held in the United States.
