  • CDC task force opens meetings to public

    December 18, 2014

    As a result of urgings from the AMA, the Community Preventive Services Task Force of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control is reopening its meetings to the public. The AMA repeatedly objected to the CDC’s expanded focus on motorcycle safety and urged the agency to allow expert federal agencies, such as the Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, to address roadway and vehicle safety issues.

  • Off-road riding protections, limits on sage grouse rules included in two bills passed by Congress

    December 16, 2014

    The National Defense Authorization Act of 2015 and the so-called CRomnibus spending bill, passed by both chambers of Congress last week, include provisions beneficial to riders of off-highway motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles, but some new Wilderness designations may infringe on access to public lands.

    Riding a motorcycle between two lanes of stopped or slowly moving traffic -- a tactic known as lane splitting -- is a relatively safe maneuver when both the motorcyclist and nearby drivers know the law and adhere to "safe and prudent" practices, according to two California studies released this week.
